Hotel Signum is a rustic and charming boutique hotel located in Malfa on Salina. Salina is one of the seven islands that make up the Aeolian Archipelago, located off the northern coast of Sicily. With only 28 rooms, this hotel feels more like a residence than a hotel but with all the amenities.
The Hotel and Surroundings
Each room at Hotel Signum is designed to be unique and intimate. The rooms feel more like bungalows, tucked away with separate entrances spanning over several buildings on the property. With embroidered linens at the windows and private terraces, Hotel Signum feels more like a series of guest houses.
The island of Salina is home to charming, picturesque villages such as Malfa, where this hotel is located, Leni and Santa Marina Salina. The island is famous for its lush and wild landscapes, capers and volcanic Malvasia wine made from local grapes. Ancient ruins and churches are scattered throughout the towns with stunning meandering walking paths throughout connecting you to towns and nearby beach coves. In the town of Malfa there are wonderful restaurants and cafes, perfect for an after the beach aperitif and dinner.
The Interiors
The hotel has traditional Aeolian architectural details with rough plaster walls and hand painted tiles throughout. The hotel has a variety of guest rooms and suites each with an intimate and rustic feel, adorned with antique furniture and beautiful original details to the buildings. The guest rooms and bathrooms have rustic plaster walls that create the perfect shell for a room by the sea.
Near the restaurant, the hotel's bar is perfect in every way. With antique wooden furniture scattered throughout a room full of hand painted tiles, guests wander through as if its their friend's sitting room. The restaurant is beautifully set on the terrace of the property with views of the sea in the distance. Hotel Signum's spa is perhaps one of our favorite spaces, with authentic thermal baths from the island's volcanic resources as well as mineral-rich pools that make for a fantastic afternoon.
In the neighborhood
Hotel Signum is located within Malfa, one of the main villages of Salina. The town has authentic Sicilian style and charm with a slower pace of life, traditional cafes and restaurants and bars filled with locals. The town has a charming backdrop of Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri. White washed plaster buildings run throughout the village with local churches in Aeolian architectural style that are always worth a visit inside.
Salina is a very walkable island and is best explored by wandering through meandering pathways. These pathways will lead you into towns and through residential streets with windows perfectly dressed with hand embroidered curtains seeing through into the charming island homes. Only about twenty minutes from Hotel Signum is the Spaggia dello Scario. A rocky beach in a stunning and wild cove. There is a quant beach cafe/ hut here that is the perfect spot to sit and enjoy lunch as a respite from the sun.
Another favorite cove for swimming was the Spaggia di Pollara not far from the hotel. Famous for its crystal clear water and views of volcanic cliffs, this is the perfect spot to swim. Find a place among a large rock by the sea to rest your things and set off into the Mediterranean for what will be one of the best swims. This cove is also where the iconic Italian film 'Il Postino' was filmed and is not to be missed.
Hotel Signum offers a quiet and off the beaten path stay on an authentic Aeolian Island. This is the perfect hotel experience for those seeking a more adventurous and rustic getaway, far from a great deal of tourists and crowds. Our days were spent hiking, swimming in the sea at local coves and savoring local wine. We will be back soon.
